Inschriftlichkeit zwischen Früh- und Spätmittelalter. Das Beispiel Rom

Die Wertschätzung für die epigraphischen Hinterlassenschaften des Mittelalters hat – inspiriert durch den „material turn“ und dessen Interpretationsansätze – in den letzten Jahren einen merklichen Aufschwung erfahren. Dabei sind kulturgeschichtliche Frage- und Problemstellungen aufs Neue ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit gerückt, die innerhalb der italienischen Forschungs bereits eine längere Tradition besitzen. Erinnert sei hier nur an das von Armando Petrucci entwickelte und auf vielfältige Weise applizierte Konzept der scritture esposte. So schärft nicht zuletzt die gezielte Fokussierung der Materialität beschriebener Artefakte und darauf aufbauend der Ausstellung, Rezeption und Präsentation von Inschriften unser Sensorium für Praktiken und Konventionen des Inschriftensetzens, die in den Altertumswissenschaften üblicherweise unter dem weithin etablierten Begriff des epigraphic habit subsumiert werden.

Ziel der internationalen Tagung ist es, die skizzierten Methoden und Theorien für das Fallbeispiel des mittelalterlichen Rom fruchtbar zu machen und sich aus diachroner Perspektive anhand des reichen Inschriftenerbes der Tibermetropole mit Eigenheiten und Mustern einer potentiell charakteristisch römischen Art der Beschriftung und Inszenierung von Textträgern auseinanderzusetzen. Auf diesem Wege sollen die Ergebnisse der in Italien und Deutschland vorangetriebenen epigraphisch-historischen Forschung zusammengetragen und zukünftige gemeinsame Projekte ausgelotet und diskutiert werden.

Pratiche epigrafiche fra alto e basso medioevo. Il caso di Roma

L’interesse per la produzione epigrafica del Medioevo, anche sulla spinta del “material turn” e dei suoi approcci interpretativi, ha registrato una forte ripresa negli ultimi anni. Allo stesso tempo, domande e problemi di ordine storico-culturale, che nel panorama italiano della ricerca godono di una tradizione più consolidata, sono nuovamente tornati al centro dell'attenzione: basti pensare al concetto di “scritture esposte”, elaborato da Armando Petrucci e impiegato secondo molteplici prospettive.

Una più attenta messa a fuoco degli aspetti materiali dei monumenti epigrafici e, di conseguenza (partendo da questo stesso presupposto), di come siano stati elaborati, inseriti in un dato contesto e recepiti, ha fra l’altro permesso di accentuare la sensibilità verso modalità e caratteristiche delle pratiche epigrafiche, che nell’ambito della storia antica vengono comunamente riassunte nel concetto, oramai diffuso e condiviso, di ‘epigraphic habit’.

Lo scopo dell’incontro di studio, che vuole avere una apertura internazionale, è quello di applicare fruttuosamente teorie e metodi quali si sono richiamati a un caso di studio specifico, rappresentato dalla Roma medievale, e, sfruttando la ricca eredità di iscrizioni che la città conserva, di confrontarsi, in una prospettiva diacronica, con specificità e modelli di quella che potrebbe rivelarsi una modalità riconoscibile appunto come tipicamente romana di organizzare, non solo dal punto di vista grafico, i supporti testuali rappresentati dalle epigrafi.

In tal senso si metteranno a confronto i risultati della ricerca storico-epigrafica come si è sviluppata tanto in Italia quanto Germania, verificando e discutendo nel contempo la possibilità di avviare in futuro progetti congiunti.

Epigraphic Habit between Early and Late Middle Ages. The Case of Rome

Inspired by the so-called material turn and associated interpretative approaches, appretiation of the analytical value of epigraphical sources for the study of the Middle Ages has greatly increased over the course of the last few years. As part of this development, attention has shifted towards issues and problems from within the wider framework of cultural history, which hold a rather long tradition in Italian scholarship ever since the days of Armando Petrucci and his skillful application of the concept of scritture eposte. In general, by deliberatly focussing on the materiality of inscribed artefacts and – based on that – their presentation, presence and perception, we get a better sense of what ancient historians commonly term epigraphic habit, i.e. the patterns and conventions of inscribing as a unique communicative practice.

The goal of the international conference is to diachronically apply these methods and theories to the case study of medieval Rome and its rich legacy of inscriptions in order to grapple with the question of possible characteristics and features of a distinctly Roman way of inscribing and staging written objects. To this aim, the planned meeting will bring together scholars from Germany and Italy and provide a platform for fruitful academic debate of the most recent findings and future avenues in the field of cooperative historical-epigraphical research.
