One of the chief objectives of the CRC 933 “Material Text Cultures” is to give sustained scientific and personal support to up-and-coming researchers in the field of text-based historical Cultural studies. In particular, given the indispensable “twin expertise” that these young researchers have not only in the special sources and methods connected with their fields, but also in cultural theory / sociology along with the relevant methodology and epistemology, this objective places special demands on doctoral training.

For this reason the Integrated Graduate School (IGS) “Textual Anthropology” has been set up as part of the CRC 933 “Material Text Cultures”, so as to guarantee outstanding interdisciplinary and clearly structured doctoral training in the field of text-based historical cultural studies and within the conceptual and thematic framework of the collaborative project. The sheer diversity of disciplines brought together by the CRC 933 “Material Text Cultures” presents the IGS “Textual Anthropology” with the opportunity both to reflect on and take a deeper look at the issues that underlie all of the projects, and to develop the ability to communicate settings, operational strategies and the findings from research questions in an interdisciplinary environment. The programme of studies at the IGS “Textual Anthropology” augments this by means of events that foster key abilities – such as in the fields of scientific and project management, scientific writing, rhetoric, and university didactics – with the aim of preparing the alumni of the IGS “Textual Anthropology” in the best possible way for professional life both in and outside of the university.
